Joel Spector, Attorney at Law
In appreciation of our wonderful clients here at Execu-Suites, we will be featuring a Client of the Month through our Social Media channels: Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. This month, we talked with Joel Spector, a criminal defense attorney that has been with our Downtown Orlando office for over ten years.
Tell us about your company. What services do you provide?
I am a criminal defense attorney and have been in the law industry for forty-one years. I handle felony and misdemeanor charges in the Circuit and County courts in Orange, Osceola, Seminole, and Volusia Counties. I also handle family law cases.
When did you originally found your firm?
I began my private law practice after serving as the City Prosecutor for Orlando from 1972 to 1973 and 1975 to 1977.
What made you decide to go out on your own after serving as the City Prosecutor?
Basically, I was propelled into the private sector after the Constitution changed and eliminated my position. I pretty much had no other choice in the matter. I wanted to go on to be in a rock and roll band, but I don’t have any musical talent!
What do you like best about being a solo practitioner?
I love being able to help people through challenging times in their lives, and to straighten out difficult situations for my clients as best as I can.
What are some of your most challenging cases?
Every case I handle is different and challenging in its own way. Being a criminal lawyer, I’ve had to take on everything from theft to murder, and each one presents a different set of challenges for me.
What’s the most challenging part of being a solo practitioner?
For me, it’s definitely time management. You’ve gotta be in court, you’ve gotta be in the office, you’ve gotta be with your clients, you’ve gotta be doing paperwork, all of it coming at the same time. Trying to find a way to manage it all can be pretty difficult sometimes.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I enjoy working out with weights at the YMCA, listening to live music, taking my girlfriend out to dinner, and traveling.
What quote or saying do you live by?
Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you’re a mile away and you have their shoes!
